The Atlantic Cup pres. by 11th Hour Racing – It’s Race Day!


It’s a beautiful, sunny day in Charleston, South Carolina, and in less than 2 hours, four teams from the United States will start the 2014 Atlantic Cup presented by 11th Hour Racing! Get your computers ready, tracking will be live on the Atlantic Cup homepage, we’ll have on board updates from our media crew members and you can even play the virtual Atlantic Cup game! Keep your browsers tuned into Atlantic, Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news and updates!Other Race News:In an unfortunate case of set backs #25 – Flatline skippered by Kyle Hubley and Frederic de Mesel, were unable to make the start in Charleston, SC, but will join the fleet in New York City. Flatline will be scored as DNS (did not start) and be given 0 points for the first leg. The first leg represents one third of the scoring for the overall Atlantic Cup, so Flatline is still in contention once they join the fleet.

Record Breaking Downwind Race Predicted by Accomplished Offshore Sailor, Brad Van LiewPre-race weather outlook: rhumb line or not; Always the big debate! “The weather for this year’s offshore leg from Charleston to New York is going to prove a fun chess match but a dicey one with luck being a part of the equation.”
Brad Van Liew is the only American to complete three solo races around the world: The 1998/99 Around Alone (3rd, Open 50), 2002/03 (1st, Open 50) and 2010/11 Velux 5 Oceans (1st, Open 60).

Look Ahead to New York City – Featured Events
Saturday May 17th – 2014 Atlantic Cup Leg 2 Race Start – 12 PM 

Come on down to Battery Park City to watch the 2014 Atlantic Cup restart from New York City to Newport. We’ll have live commentary and our race partners will be on hand with products, gear and more! The start line will be just off the southwest corner of North Cove Marina, and you’ll easily be able to view the fleet as they race south towards the turning mark before heading north to Newport.

Wrapping up the week’s events all attendees are invited to a cocktail party alongside the boats in North Cove Marina. Network with the speakers, attendees and sailors racing in the Atlantic Cup.

On Thursday, May 15 the Atlantic Cup and 11th Hour Racing present Living on the Edge 2.0: sponsored by Hornblower Cruises & Events, a celebration of the most sustainable sailing race in the United States.

The evening cocktail party and program will call attention to the fine edge we walk as our climate changes and how we can look towards new technology to help solve some of the most challenging issues facing us. Environmental news site with a twist, founder Chip Giller will moderate the event with opening marks given by Wendy Schmidt of The Schmidt Family Foundation & 11th Hour RacingRichard Jenkins, Co-Founder & CEO of SaildroneRyan Williams, Director of Sustainability for MethodCameron Clark, VP and General Manager of Hornblower Cruises and Events are panelists.

Water Week NYC is the newest addition to the Atlantic Cup. From sea level rise, to urban water infrastructure to delivering water to North China, Water Week will bring together leaders facing global water issues to form solutions.

Topics on the transforming and evolution of the New York and New Jersey waterfront, reaching untapped potential for tourism in New York, and identifying new water innovations for the future will be covered. The event is full of networking opportunities and will take place on the Hornblower Hybrid in Pier 25. Following the day Sessions, WaterWeek NYC will conclude with Living on the Edge 2.0 sponsored by Hornblower Cruises and Events.
